Add Covid to the list of what I’ve survived

After a ninety-minute wait in the shampoo and makeup aisles of a CVS pharmacy yesterday, a lovely woman named Ann aimed with twinkly eyes at my right shoulder and, for the second time in five weeks, plunged a syringe-full of Covid vaccine into it.

Fifteen minutes later, I walked out into the Sonoma County sunshine feeling like I’d dodged another date with the Reaper. On the forty-five-minute drive home, I thought about the other things I’ve survived in my completely ordinary, but wholly remarkable life. Among them:
